VISION Guide

The Annual Catholic Religious Vocation Discernment Guide

GUIDELINES FOR WRITERS

Focus

VISION Vocation Guide is a comprehensive resource for people considering religious life or priesthood in a religious community. It is published by TrueQuest Communications on behalf of the National Religious Vocation Conference. VISION appears annually in a print and digital edition, and editorial content is also included in its robust website, VocationNetwork.org, for those considering a vocation as a Catholic sister, brother, or priest. The interactive website includes articles on religious life, resources for religion teachers, parents, and youth ministers,  a community search, vocation events calendar, and the popular Vocation Match service. VocationNetwork.org has been named a top-ten vocation website by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and VISION Vocation Guide and VocationNetwork.org have received numerous awards for editorial excellence from the Catholic Press Association.

Readers and target audience

VISION readers are very diverse, but the primary readership and target audience are committed Catholics in their 20s or early 30s who feel a yearning for “something more” in their lives and are wondering if God is calling them to religious life. They vary greatly in profession, race, ethnicity, politics, theology, and preferred lifestyle.

Style

VISION is written in a conversational style free from terms that would be unfamiliar to the average Catholic reader. First-person articles are especially welcome. Authors are encouraged to submit a sidebar item to accompany their article.

VISION articles should provide insight into what it means to be a contemporary Catholic sister, priest, brother, missionary, or monk. The magazine considers all aspects of religious life: prayer, discernment, community life, vows, formation, mission, ministry, and Catholic teachings.

VISION celebrates the best of religious life while acknowledging difficulties and controversies. Articles are expected to have broad appeal; personal stories and examples from the life of a particular religious community are acceptable and encouraged to make articles concrete and reflect the experiences of the author. Underlying all articles is the understanding that the basis of consecrated life is a spirituality deeply rooted in Christian love and service and commitment to following God fully.

Pay

VISION pays $450 upon acceptance for articles of 1,000 to 1,500 words. VISION pays $100 for reprints.

VISION writers are contracted as "work for hire." VISION and its parent organization, the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC) retains the rights to purchased articles and may reprint them in other media or give permission to others to reprint them for noncommercial use. If other publishers wish to reprint a VISION article for commercial use, VISION will refer them to the author, who may negotiate payment for the reprint.

Photos

VISION welcomes both photo stories as well as high-quality color photos to illustrate an article. In addition, the magazine prints a small photo of authors. All writers are asked to submit a picture of themselves, suitable to run in thumbnail size. Please send high-resolution color photos (300 dpi). VISION will use photos (submitted and purchased) in all media forms, including its print edition, digital edition, website, video and social media sites and in associated vocation media. Photos that are purchased by VISION are considered “work for hire” as described above.

Submissions

VISION encourages article proposals as a first step to developing articles. The best time of year to pitch ideas is late summer or early fall.

Authors are asked to send a one-sentence author ID that includes such things as religious community, job title, work experience, published works, or city where they live.
