Our Mission

We, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., are a monastic community of women who seek God in our daily lives according to the Gospel and the Rule of Benedict. Through our ministry of prayer, work and community living, we listen and respond to the needs of the Church and the world.

Prayer Requests

As a Benedictine monastic community, a significant part of our mission is prayer. Is there someone or something you would like us to pray for? You’re invited to share your special intentions with us. You will be remembered during our daily prayer of Liturgy of the Hours, and your request will be shared on a community bulletin board seen by the sisters every day.

It is our privilege to pray for you. God bless you!

Message From the Prioress

Come, Holy Spirit!

On May 19, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Spirit is the love of God at work in the world.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Organ Concert by Lola Wolf • Sunday, May 19, 2024

Lola Wolf, an alumna of Saint Benedict’s High School and the College of Saint Benedict, will perform an organ concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in Sacred Heart Chapel. She will be joined by the monastic schola, directed by Sister Janine Mettling. The public is invited to attend this program, which centers around the theme of Mary.

The featured composition is “O Domina Nostra” by Polish composer Henryk Gorecki, written for the 600th anniversary of the Black Madonna in Poland. There will also be an art display of the Black Madonna pieces created by Sister Thomas Carey. These works date back to the 1940s.

Daily Meditation for May 17, 2024

The roar of a violent wind, strange ribbons of flames above their heads, a fresh fervor and awe at the presence of a power much greater than any earthly power filled the room where they gathered to pray. The only person in the room who really knew what was happening was Mary, the mother of Jesus. She knew! She had personal contact with this great Spirit of God some 33 years before. That Spirit had invited her to be the mother of God! And what a “ride” that had been! Now, that same Spirit, roaring this time! What would be the invitation? To fold her hands and become a plastic statue? To dictate a book on her Son’s life and teachings? …or to stand with the members of the infant church in rejoicing, proclaiming, praying, and daring?

She knew it would continue to be a love filled adventure! And what is the Spirit sending you to do?
