April 2024
This program offers a space for contemplation, not only through the mind but through the body and spirit as well. Rooted in ancient traditions, this will truly be a practice of connecting not only to the self but also to the collective. It will remind us that everything is interconnected and exists here in the present moment. “There is no healing or transformation without connection.” (-Joanna Macy; World as Lover, World as Self). Tying the breath, community, nature, compassion, presence, and oneness together brings about a sense of purpose and peace. Our hour of practice will consist of meditation and movement, guided by Zoya, on the themes of interdependence and community, loving kindness and compassion, and the present moment. Join us at Yoga for Peacemaking, meeting the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. All are welcome for this free, beginner-friendly program. Blocks, straps, and mats are provided.

A Vocation Discernment Retreat is an opportunity to experience the peace of a monastic atmosphere, pray the Liturgy of the Hours with the Sisters, join in the Eucharist, dialogue with other discerners, and reflect on God’s calling. The retreat weekend offers an opportunity to learn about religious life in dialogue with the vocation director, community members, and other discerners. Input sessions include general information on discernment and the different types of communities as well as specific information about the Benedictine Sisters of Elizabeth. In addition to prayer and meals with the sisters, discerners also have the opportunity to hear vocation stories and interact with the sisters at an evening social. *Discernment Retreats are open to single women ages 18-55.

Benedictines in every age try to save what might otherwise be discarded or devalued by a throw-away society. In a community of writers, we will gather up knowledge, hard-won wisdom, and the gifts our lives have given us. We will explore their meaning for us and for future generations of readers. We will experiment with several ways of putting those experiences into words that will reach across the generations (memoir, letters, poems, hybrid forms, etc.). We will read and respond to each other’s writing. Instructor: Mara Faulkner, OSB Limit: 8 participants Fee: $150 Registration Link: https://sbm.osb.org/event/harvesting-preserving-and-passing-on-the-gifts-of-our-lives-a-heritage-writing-workshop/2024-04-06/

Meditation provides a deeper appreciation of the interdependence of all things and the part each person plays. It is a way of listening more deeply, so you hear from a deeper space. Meditation will help you quiet your mind, enhance your ability to be insightful and understanding, and give you a sense of inner peace. Please join Waterspirit for a “Meditation for Earth.” We read a short Earth-centered reflection, followed by an excerpt from Hal Borland’s 12 Moons of the Year. Then we lead a simple meditation to music followed with silence. The meditation lasts approximately 30-35 minutes. No matter where you are in the world, you can join us as we meditate for our Earth!

During this meeting, our group will discuss Soil and Soul by Alastair McIntosh. This extraordinary book weaves together theology, mythology, economics, ecology, history, poetics, and politics as the author journeys towards a radical new yet ancient philosophy of community, Spirit, and place. His daring and imaginative responses to the destruction of the natural world make this an uplifting, inspirational, and often richly humorous read. Alastair McIntosh is a Scottish academic and activist. A fellow of the Centre for Human Ecology, he lectures all over the world on subjects including new economics, community, and nonviolent defense strategies.

HEART is an online community of young women who are discerning a vocation to the religious life, and would like to know more about life as a Sister of Christian Charity. The acronym, HEART stands for: Hear, Encounter, Ask, Receive, Transform. Each month we meet to discuss discernment, our community's charism, vocation stories, ministries, etc. We hope that this gathering gives young women the opportunity to learn about our community, ask questions, and grow in prayerfulness so as to discern where God is calling them. Following the example of our foundress, Blessed Pauline von Mallinckrodt, we strive to exemplify her words: "We should have an inexpressible great heart, with nothing in it but love."

Join Waterspirit’s Summer Solstice Celebration. Through music, movement & ritual, we honor the earth, sun & water working in harmony to bring us the gifts of summer. On this, the summer solstice, we celebrate the light, energy, and warmth of the sun. The sun is on the ocean; the fire is on the water. The warmth and flow make life. The sun touches our skin and changes us, making the vitamins we need for health. We are structured water reaching for the sun. The sun helps the plants produce the food and oxygen we need to live. We pray with gratitude for water that is life and for the light, energy, warmth and food we receive so abundantly from the generous, self-giving sun.

REGISTER for this informational meeting that will outline what this 10-week support group entails, explain the course’s suggested donation, and answer any questions you might have prior to committing. The group will meet on Zoom from 9/11-11/13 at 7-9 p.m. ET. Climate change, super storms, rising sea levels, large-scale pollution—do these problems seem large, looming, intractable? If you’re feel vulnerable, dis-empowered, or burnt-out, you’re not alone: eco-anxiety, climate grief, and other climate feelings are shared by many people who are paying attention to the climate crisis. Addressing these heavy feelings in community can be a way of generating the personal resilience needed to cope with an uncertain future. Waterspirit hosts eco-anxiety peer support groups using the Good Grief Network’s “10 Steps to Personal Resilience and Empowerment in a Chaotic Climate” method. Please join us for this informational session that will introduce the group's methodology, giving you an opportunity to meet the facilitators and ask any questions prior to committing to the 10 weeks. After this informational session, Waterspirit's Autumn 2024 group will run from 9/11-11/13 from 7-9 p.m. ET. The Good Grief Network offers multi-modal techniques that help facilitate the metabolizing of heavy feelings that can distract us from our work in the world. This methodology provides the missing piece that helps prevent activism fatigue and burn out. These tools are necessary for those of us looking to sustain ourselves for the long haul. More information about the Good Grief Network is available at: https://www.goodgriefnetwork.org/10-steps/

In the Rule, St. Benedict writes, “We believe that the Divine Presence is everywhere.” How does prayer lead us to this divine presence? How does it make a difference in our lives and in the world? This four-session series on prayer will include brief presentations, conversation, and practice of a particular prayer form. We will explore scriptural prayer, Centering Prayer, short prayers and liturgical prayer. Facilitator: Christian Morris, OSB Limit: 12 participants Fee: $140
